A

Asymptote

A line that a curve approaches but never quite touches, no matter how far it extends.

Example: y = 0 is a horizontal asymptote of y = 1/x.
A

Area

The amount of space enclosed within a two-dimensional shape.

Example: the area of a rectangle is length × width.
B

Binomial

An algebraic expression made up of exactly two terms, joined by + or −.

Example: x + 5 and 3a − 2b are both binomials.
C

Coefficient

The numerical factor that multiplies a variable in a term.

Example: in 7x, the coefficient is 7.
C

Circumference

The distance around the outside of a circle.

Example: circumference = 2πr.
D

Derivative

A measure of how a function's output changes as its input changes — the slope of the function at a point.

Example: the derivative of x² is 2x.
D

Domain

The complete set of possible input (x) values for a function.

Example: the domain of √x is all x ≥ 0.
E

Equation

A mathematical statement that two expressions are equal, connected by an "=" sign.

Example: 2x + 3 = 11.
F

Factor

A number or expression that divides another number or expression exactly, with no remainder.

Example: 3 and 4 are factors of 12.
F

Function

A rule that assigns exactly one output to each input.

Example: f(x) = x + 2 assigns 7 to the input 5.
H

Hypotenuse

The longest side of a right triangle, opposite the right angle.

Example: in a 3-4-5 triangle, 5 is the hypotenuse.
I

Integer

A whole number that can be positive, negative, or zero — no fractions or decimals.

Example: −3, 0, and 42 are all integers.
I

Integral

The reverse process of differentiation, often used to find the area under a curve.

Example: ∫x dx = x²/2 + C.
M

Mean

The average of a set of numbers, found by summing them and dividing by how many there are.

Example: the mean of 2, 4, 6 is 4.
M

Median

The middle value in a data set when the numbers are arranged in order.

Example: the median of 1, 3, 9 is 3.
P

Polynomial

An expression made of variables and coefficients, combined using addition, subtraction and non-negative whole-number exponents.

Example: 3x² − 5x + 2.
P

Probability

A measure of how likely an event is to occur, expressed as a number from 0 to 1.

Example: the probability of flipping heads is 0.5.
Q

Quadratic Equation

An equation where the highest power of the variable is 2.

Example: x² − 5x + 6 = 0.
R

Ratio

A comparison of two quantities showing how many times one contains the other.

Example: a ratio of 3:2 means 3 parts to 2 parts.
R

Radius

The distance from the center of a circle to any point on its edge.

Example: if the diameter is 10, the radius is 5.
S

Slope

A measure of the steepness of a line, calculated as rise over run.

Example: a line through (0,0) and (2,4) has slope 2.
S

Standard Deviation

A measure of how spread out a set of numbers is from the mean.

Example: a small standard deviation means values cluster close to the mean.
T

Theorem

A statement that has been proven true using logical reasoning and previously established facts.

Example: the Pythagorean Theorem.
V

Variable

A letter or symbol used to represent an unknown or changeable value.

Example: in 2x + 3, x is the variable.
V

Vertex

The highest or lowest point of a parabola, or the point where two lines/edges meet.

Example: the vertex of y = x² is at (0,0).
X

X-Intercept

The point(s) where a graph crosses the x-axis, where y = 0.

Example: y = x − 4 has an x-intercept at (4, 0).
